Egret, Western Reef

Western Reef Egret - Egretta gularis gularis
The Gambia - November 2018

There are two color morphs of Western Reef Egret, a dark morph which is shown here and a white morph.  The white morph may not be separable from Little Egret in the field, in fact, this species was once considered part of the Little Egret complex.  This subspecies is found in West Africa.  Although the taxonomy is somewhat confused there appear to be at least four subspecies of Western Reef Egret.  These images are framegrabs taken from video recorded in The Gambia during November 2018 - video link.
