There are several types of radish and they are grown throughout the world.  The ones shown here are known as spring or summer radishes, or sometimes European radishes.  

The taproot, shown here is the most frequently used part of the plant and it is generally eaten raw, perhaps with a bit of salt.  This type of radish will often have a taste like ground black pepper.  The tops of the plant may be eaten as salad greens, sauteed, or added to soups.
