There are six or seven subspecies of the Golden-tailed Woodpecker, depending on whether the Mombasa Woodpecker is considered a full species or a subspecies of the Golden-tailed. This subspecies is found from Senegambia eastward to South Sudan, western Uganda, and the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
