The tomato was originally domesticated in the Americas and spread around the world as part of the colonization craze. It is the edible berry of Solanum lycopersicum. When first introduced to Europe many thought it was posionous (many species in the genus Solanum [Nightshade] are).
Tomatos come in many sizes and can vary significantly in their acidity. This is one of the world’s greatest foods - and the smell which exudes from tomato vine is transfixing.
